The Small Business Owner’s Perspective of Backup and Disaster Recovery

If you are a small business owner then no doubt you are familiar with the concept of cost cutting.  Now relax, sport.  We are not suggesting that you are cheap.  However, to make it in business you do have to cut costs and only pay for the services you need most.  Forget tipping that waitress an extra five.  Think two dollars!

Seriously, we understand the importance of cutting costs.  That said, many business owners make a huge mistake by not investing in quality backup solutions.  They may be content to save data on a hard drive, or perhaps a floppy or a CD/DVD disc.  They figure, what can possibly go wrong?

Indeed, plenty can go wrong.  Information on hard drives can become corrupt.  Discs can become corrupt.  Equipment can burn out or fail.  Sometimes you do not even get fair warning that this could occur.  While you can look for signs of imminent hard drive failure, in a typical business day you will probably not notice anything out of the ordinary.

Now we ask you, what are your most important files?  Do you have a database of blogs, or perhaps a half dozen mailing lists containing thousands of names?  Have you scanned your most important legal documents?  Have you compiled a list of names and news stories and created a searchable index?  Have you purchased a $2,000 POS sales program that is the very lifeblood of your company?  Even if you have a backup disc, how do you plan to recover the databases later on?  What if the databases are corrupt?

These are the questions that help you see the whole perspective of business and backup.  Your company cannot survive without a computer—that much you know.  However, a computerised company cannot live long without a spectacular disaster recovery program in place.
